Udon Thani is a prominent province in the north-eastern region of Thailand, located near the Mekong river and the border of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Its strategic location and large population contribute to Udon Thani’s diversity of people and nature. The rich culture and environment, along with the well-planned transportation system throughout the province with connections to the neighbouring countries, has resulted in Udon Thani’s fast-growing economy and flourishing communities. The land’s unique geological characteristics and biological diversity supply the province with horti-cultural abundance, making Udon Thani a prominent trading hub of horticultural products of northeastern Thailand and the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). The Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo 2026 will mark the first time the expo is hosted in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) and in the most significant wetland of the northeastern region of Thailand.
The unique fertility of wetlands sustains the life of humans and nature alike, creating both cultural diversity and biodiversity, birthing a “Diversity of Life” that has been sustaining lives in the past and present, and will serve as a key factor in building a foundation towards a sustainable future for the next generations. As the world’s interest in geopolitics increases, Udon Thani serves as the perfect platform to showcase the significance of resource sharing in the region and how it can create balance, benefiting the river and affecting the lives of its people and the biodiversity of nature. Udon Thani, as a key trade city of the GMS, would like to showcase the concept of living in harmony and sharing the abundance of this international river that bestows both the cultural heritage of the past and food security for the future for all members of this region.
Expo 2026 serves as the perfect opportunity for Udon Thani to promote this vision in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), in order to move the world and society towards sustainability with an abundance of life and resources.
